NS, the Dutch rail operator, has announced that its trains now run on 100 percent wind energy, according to The Guardian. Together with energy supplier Eneco, the railway company—which runs about 5500 trips a day—achieved the global milestone on January 1, substantially before its goal of 2018.
Over the course of an hour, a single windmill can power a train traveling 120 miles. According to NS and Eneco, this enables 600,000 train travelers per day to travel without generating emissions.
NS and Eneco began working on the project in 2015, and ran 75 percent of trains on wind power last year.
The Netherlands isn’t the only European country to attempt to mitigate the environmental impact of its transit systems. Germany plans to launch a hydrogen-powered passenger train this year. The idea has also been floated to some extent in the U.S., a country that lacks widespread passenger train routes. California plans to run its future high-speed railway on renewable energy, though that $64 billion project has encountered multiple roadblocks since it was approved by the state legislature in 2012. |

| Today: IC Den Haag Centraal - Eindhoven. Again, in Oisterwijk, between Tilburg and Eindhoven. Brand new NS FLIRT. In service sindce some months. 4 cars long NS FLIRT. Another IC in The Netherlands. I had a train ride with a FLIRT; some inside pictures: 2nd class seating. Toilet in the background. 1st class seating. The train is provided with power outlets and usb outlets at every seat. Boarding the train with same level as platform. This would be the mandatory standard in about 10 years I believe. Every train must be accesible for handicaped people with wheelchairs etc without extra help. Extra men's toilet in a VIRMm (modernised VIRM). |

„Rail transport: Commission calls on the NETHERLANDS to comply with EU rules on competitive award of rail public transport contracts The European Commission decided to open an infringement procedure by sending a letter of formal notice to the Netherlands (INFR(2023)4011) for failure to correctly apply Regulation (EC) No 1370/2007 on public passenger transport by road and rail. The Netherlands has decided to award the concession contract for passenger transport services by rail to the incumbent operator Nederlandse Spoorwegen, the Dutch railway. The contract starts on 1 January 2025 and is awarded under the provision of the Regulation that allows the unconditional direct award of public service contracts for rail services, but which ceases to apply as of 24 December 2023. After that date, the service contracts for public transport services by rail should, in principle, be competitively tendered. The direct award of such contracts is the exception, and from December 2023, can only be used in limited, well-defined circumstances. The long period between the date of award, 24 December 2023 at the latest, and when services will start after 1 January 2025, is without objective justification. In this context, the Commission considers that the decision to directly award this contract now constitutes a circumvention of the principle of competitive award. The Commission is therefore sending a letter of formal notice to The Netherlands, which now has two months to respond and address the shortcomings raised by the Commission. In the absence of a satisfactory response, the Commission may decide to issue a reasoned opinion.” _________________ :TTT:
